Engineers on the Rappahannock (Part 7) – Franklin’s Crossing

Early in the morning of 11 December 1862, alert Union sentries know ‘today is the day’. The pontoon trains are moving. It is time to gather the Army of the Potomac’s far-flung camps. Today, they will cross the Rappahannock River to come face to face with General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Word spreads! Soon, artillery and infantry will follow.
